Woody loves this photo

I thought it would be worth one more look at this flattering picture of Woody before we put it away until the Installation Banquet in June 2006. Woody was so proud of this photo that he suggested bodily injury may befall me if it showed up on this blog.

Sorry Woody, I could not resist!

Why we stand for the District Governor

President Richard made the Wilson Rotary Club aware that when District Governor Brenda Tinkham visits with us at the club on Monday for her annual visit we should stand at her introduction to speak and again at the conclusion of her speech.

It was always my thought that this was done as a sign of respect. Other Rotarians I had spoken with said that it was done out of a sense of tradition. Both are equally good reasons to stand for the District Governor (DG) and even the Past District Governor (PDG).

However, both of these answers to the question of why Rotarians stand for their DG are misconceptions.

At the Rotary Leadership Institute I attended a about 18 months ago I learned that the Rotary International President is considered a diplomat of the same level as an ambassador or foreign dignitary. The District Governor is considered a formal emissary of the RI President and should be extended the same protocol.

Thus we stand for the District Governor.

Club Assembly

Today at Wilson Rotary Club we held our first Club Assembly of the new Rotary Year. Basically a Club Assembly gives the Directors and Officers an opportunity to report on their various portfolios so club members will be apprised of the activities planned.
Before the reporting began President Richard (McKellar) awarded Bruce Beasley with a Distinguished Service Citation from the District for his work with the Group Study Exchange (GSE) Team from India. Bruce worked very diligently to arrange for activities, lodging, transportation, and numerous other unknown to us needs. Thank you Bruce for representing the Club and the District in such a fine way. You made us all look good.
President Richard also presented Past President Ed Wyatt with his Past President's lapel pin. President Richard apologized to Ed for the club being apparently to frugal to purchase Ed's pin last year.

For the Reports:
Club Service: Karl McKinnon (your humble blogger) reported that the Directory would soon be updated and reflect any changes from folks moving and changing jobs. The Fellowship Trip will likely be in January. The Webpage has been updated and the blog has been created to make for a dynamic web presence. Any input is always welcome.

International Service: Eddie Gauss reported that he is working on a project at Barton College to recognize their international students at WRC meetings. Norvell stated that there are approximately 50 international students enrolled at Barton. More to come on this later.

Public Relations: Pete Dempsey reported that Frank Eagles has accepted the responsibility again for the Auction Fund Raiser. The event will be November 4th at the Arts Council of Wilson.
Vocational Service: Jolly Barnes has been busy with her portfolio. Jolly is working on an industrial tour for Cott Beverage. There will be a replacement program for the HOST program this year. A couple of important dates were announced for the dictionary project. Cut off for donations is August 12th and bookplates will be the club program on August 23.

Community Service: The meals on Wheels Program is in good shape for the next few months. The Latin Health Fair will be held next summer.

Programs: Vice President Kent Montgomery reported that he is making excellent progress in scheduling programs. The next installation banquet will be June 27 at the Wilson Country Club. Kent also added that if anyone is interested in suggesting a program or topic please let him know.

Youth Services: Fred Horne stated that he is considering meeting with Ben Eagles to discuss the portfolio, but Ben said his going rate for consulation is $500 per hour (chuckles abounded). Fred added that we would have a complete schedule of activities in the very near future as dates for specific projects are accepted by club members.

Foundation: Sandy Arens reported that we had a good year with regard to the Foundation. We presented five (5) Paul Harris Fellowships and participated with the other club to present Matt Edwards from the Salvation Army with the Civic Paul Harris Fellowship. Sandy reminded us all to consider a Paul Harris Fellowship for our spouse, for a child or parent. Sandy asked that we all become a Sustaining Member.

Treasurer: Mary Long reported that we finished up last year in great shape financially.
All in all for a Club Assembly this was a good meeting.

Apologies to Steven Leder

For what ever reason I could not seem to get S-t-e-v-e-n L-e-d-e-r's name
spelled correctly. I goofed on the e-mail invitations and the wrap up
commentary.

Steven you did a great job as emcee of our event and I apologize for the
error.

What is it they say the sweetest thing a person can hear is their own
name... Sorry Steven for the misspelling.

Kudos to Ed Wyatt for the WDT Publicity

Ed Wyatt, Past President, ADG 7720, Newsletter Editor, and I am proud to call him friend, has worked magic in getting the Wilson Daily Times to put civic club member profiles into the paper on a regular basis.

The first profile featured Rotarian Milo Gibbs.

Ed Wyatt is to be thanked for his efforts with the newsletter ... By the way he welcomes articles, news, photos, and your CV for inclusion in the newsletter. The newsletter takes a great deal of work and time to make a tangible "in your hand" representation of WRC.

Ed does a great job. Thank him the next time you see him for his dedication to the Club.

PS Jolly Barnes is the creative engine that makes the newsletter work ... Thank her too.

Happy New Year!

Welcome to the second century of Rotary around the world and to Wilson Rotary's 88th year. Wilson Rotary began the year with a great celebration on Tuesday, June 28th at Wilson Country Club.

Before the highlights of the evening, we should all stand and give Eldon Newton, President Elect, a round of applause for a fantastic meal and program... Kent has his work cut out for him next year.

Evening Highlights:
  • Slide show -- 300 slides and Billy Joel music from our fellowship outting in January to Movin Out.
  • Door Prizes -- Wow what a lot of gifts. As usual the gift certificates from Vaughn Jewelers was a hit. I would have loved the pottery bowl.

  • Service Awards
    • Community Paul Harris Fellow Recognition

Cindy Cash, counselor, educator, volunteer, friend and daughter of our dear member that passed away a couple of years ago, Sam Ruth.

Cindy has been a wonderful community leader and cares deeply about Wilson and its children. On a personal note Imagination Station Science Museum would not be in existence had it not been for the guidance, work and leadership of both Cindy and Jim Cash.

Cindy's efforts at Greenfield School have been seen on the resumes and records of many students.

When she received this honor Cindy's response was to say she is unworthy and will now work harder.

      Thank you Cindy.

    • Club Paul Harris Fellowship

Tom Evans was recognized as the 2005 Paul Harris Fellow for his dedication and hard work for the Wilson Rotary Club and our Community. Despite suffering a serious orthopedic injury that sidelined Tom for more than half of the year, he continued to make sure his duties as Community Service Director were fulfilled.

Tom handled Meals on Wheels, The Latino Health Fair, Developed a Program for assisting non-English speakers learn English as a Second Language. Tom also took the lead on getting the Wilson Rotary Club involved with the Wilson Crisis Center.

Tom was basically speechless on receiving this prestigious award... Something unusual for Tom.

    • M.J. Bird Award

Karl McKinnon ... Yes your humble author received the M.J. Bird Award ... the Wilson Rotary Club equivalent of Rotarian of the Year. I am humbled and feel undeserving of this recognition. I am so proud to be a Rotarian and believe passionately in what we do as an an organization.

We have a great club and great leadership. I am just fortunate to be a part of the club and have such able colleagues in Service Above Self.

I know my mother would have gleamed at the prospect of her youngest son being recorded in the Wilson Rotary Club history with an award that continues to be a part of our heritage year after year.
I would like to recognize Steven Leder for his work as our emcee. A few good jokes. A couple of bad ones ... On par with past president Tom Wilson.

Lastly, speaking of Tom Wilson. Congrats on a successful year and you are missed! Best of luck in California and come see us soon!
